Overall Goal: Students will learn and understand the Thirteen Colonies. They will complete research and tasks to learn about the life in the colonies. Students will compare and contrast life in the Thirteen Colonies with life today.
Task 1: Students will learn about the regions of the Thirteen Colonies: New England, Middle, and Southern. They will understand the similarities and differences in climate, geography, economy, and other facts. Using the facts they learned, they will create a brochure on their colony.
Task 2: Students will learn about simple machines. They will examine simple machines and think of ways they were used in colonial times. Using descriptive words, they will write an “I Am" paragraph about their simple machine.
Task 3: Students will learn what it is like to plot a new colony through multiplication with the area model. They will compute multiplication problems of buildings to plot areas on graph paper.
Task 4: Students will learn the daily life among colonists and write a narrative about one colonist. They will understand the differences among the colonists through a final exhibition.
Task 5: Students will learn about the founding fathers through a Founding Fathers PowerPoint. They will create their own portrait of themselves as a colonists. They will understand how portraits were used to create a depiction of a person before cameras.
